Nursing Bras – or – Can we be pretty milk producers?

Nothing can prepare a woman for the insaneness of breastfeeding. First your boobies swell to mammoth proportions, then there’s added bonus referred to as  the” let-down” – sounds like a moody depression but it’s actually when the milk is released before & during feeding (or sometimes when you just think about your baby!). The let-down causes leakage & swollen, tender ta-tas.

I went from an attractive & completely managable 75D (34D) chest to a balloon-like 80F (36F) – whoa mama! Having always worn pretty undies I was dismayed at the boring, non-supportive total blah-ness of the nursing bras available in my size here – just because I’m nursing doesn’t mean I’ve given up wanting to feel attractive. Thankfully Mr. Internet provided me with some options by way of the U.K.

Here’s my thoughts on the drop-cup nursing bras I’ve purchased:

Naturana Still-Bh

Purchased:  in Berlin (also available here)

Support:  Not much

Attractiveness:  None, this is just a plain, (semi-)functional bra

Washability: Machine washable in a lingerie bag

Comfort: Terrible for everyday wear, it gives minimal support (& looks awful under clothes) but great for a sleeping bra as it keeps nursing pads in place during night time leakages.

Emily B Iris Nursing Bra

Purchased from:  The Nursing Bra Company, UK

Support:  Not enough for an F-cup, possibly better for smaller sizes

Attractiveness:  This is a pretty bra with sweet lace, ribbon & pearl details

Washability: Machine washable in a lingerie bag

Comfort: Ok for everyday home wear but it gives less than stellar support and it has a weird thick seam straight through the center of both cups, I’m not sure if this is supposed to provide added support but it just cuts my boobs in half…not an attractive look, but again satisfactory for a sleeping bra.

Miriam Stoppard Nurture Nursing Bra

Purchased from:  Debenhams, UK

Support: Very supportive

Attractiveness:  An attractive  bra with delicate lace details (mine is fire engine red!)

Washability: Machine washable in a lingerie bag

Comfort: Great for everyday home wear but gives a bit of a pointy-boob look to fuller chests, also the “nipple/feeding  holes” are bit small and become tight & rather uncomfortable during let-down.

Hotmilk “Her desire was dangerous” Nursing Bra

Purchased from:  Happy Tiny Babies, UK (also available here)

Support: Extremely supportive due to the Power fabric wings & A-frame design

Attractiveness:  An absolutely gorgeous bra (my husband loves it too!)

Washability: Hand wash (I machine wash in a lingerie bag & have no problems)

Comfort: Great for everyday wear (& for those seductive moments too!). Looks great under clothing, is very comfortable & the double thickness  and decorative padding of the straps mean no more ouchy red shoulder marks!

Moda by Mothercare Nursing T-shirt Bra

Purchased from:  Mothercare, UK

Support: Extremely supportive

Attractiveness: Nothing fancy, just a simple black bra (gives great cleavage!)

Washability: Machine washable in a lingerie bag

Comfort: Awesome for everyday wear,  has a fantastic shape & because it’s a T-shirt bra with smooth molded cups there are no “lace-wrinkles”  under clothing!

Hotmilk “She was seemingly unaware” Nursing Bra

Purchased from:  Happy Tiny Babies, UK (also available here)

Support: Extremely supportive due to the Power fabric wings & A-frame design

Attractiveness:  A stunning lilac & black bra (the matching knickers are fab too!)

Washability: Hand wash (I machine wash in a lingerie bag & have no problems)

Comfort: Like the other Hot milk bra: Great for everyday wear (& for those seductive moments too!). Looks great under clothing, is very comfortable & the double thickness  and decorative padding of the straps mean no more ouchy red shoulder marks! However, the “nipple/feeding  holes” are bit small and become tight & rather uncomfortable during let-down.

  1. Ugh! I agree! Nursing bras are horrible! (Particularly for the larger chested.) So far, I’ve noticed some cute, affordable ones at Target, but I don’t know if they’re available where you are.

And you know what… They should make nursing bras to be the SEXIEST of them all! It’s the time in a woman’s life when her boobs are the biggest they’ll ever be! We should live it up! It doesn’t last forever!

Don't be shy...lemme know what you think...
