Hugs for Grandma

My mom, missing her grandbaby’s hugs & sloppy kisses, is once again journeying halfway across the planet to visit us. As her birthday is in December & we won’t be trekking across the world to join them for Christmas, we’re planning on having a couple of pre-celebrations while she’s here. I’ve managed to create some pretty awesome gifts for her to take home, but the most fantastic of all is this:

A soft & squeezy grandbaby hug she can take wherever she goes!

Here’s the crazy simple how-to:

Grab a long-sleeved just-outgrown onesie or shirt (& some scraps to use for “hands”)…

…attempt the nearly impossible task of tracing your baby’s hand. Cut it out…

Cut the onesie/shirt in half. Using your traced baby hand as a template, cut out 4 “mittens” from your scraps. (I used a piece of old pink t-shirt)

Stitch your hands together (leave the wrist open for stuffing), turn right-side-out & lightly stuff – don’t make them too puffy or the next step won’t work…

Using a coordinating thread, hand stitch some fingers onto your hands…

…pop your hands into the sleeves & sew ’em together…

Looking good!

Turn your almost-hug inside out, stitch the bottom closed & stuff it (arms too!) through the neck hole.

Machine or hand-stitch the neck closed…

Stitch the inside of the finger tips together…

…and your baby hug is finished! The best part – as you used a just-outgrown (or still-fits) shirt, the hug is the actual size of your cutie-patootie’s real squeezes! Total Awesomesauce!

Grandma can have hangin’-around-hugs…

…piggie-back-hugs…

…and the ever popular sideways-baby-hugs!

*I’m thinkin’ this would also work for mommy & daddy hugs too – just use an old long-sleeved shirt & hand tracing of your own & you’ll have a snuggly hug to keep the monsters away at night!

all the tutes!
