A Vintage Decor Thrifty Thursday

I can never pass up handcrafted wooden decorations at the thrift store…the older the better!

Take a closer peek at some of the faves I’ve collected over the years…

Happiness is…Vintage Furniture!

We’re finally moving into an actual (little yet lovely) house with a yard and everything! No small feat to find in the crowded metropolis of Berlin! This one literally fell into our laps and is located – get this – behind our current apartment building in the “Remise”…

and just what the heck is a Remise? (pronounced ree-mee-zay)

A fabulous old converted farm building!

Since discovering our soon-to-be-new-home I’ve been stalking the kleinanzeigen (online classifieds) for thrifty yet awesome home furnishings and am delighted to share the quirktastic vintage treasures that I scored for my new kitchen:

erm, yeah…I forgot to mention that our new home, although full of potential, requires quite a bit of work to transform it into the spectacular space I envision it to be – this DIY diva is definitely up for the challenge!

How fabulous is that turn of the century kitchen buffet? Some elbow grease & creativity will have it back to its former glory in no time!

I was floored by the awesomeness of this old hideaway wash basin table (it shall soon be transformed into my new kitchen island) + the lovely seller gave us that 1922 typewriter as a “little bonus” – Wheeee!

all this beauty needs is a good old-fashioned scrubbing!

and last but certainly not least my 41st birthday gift to myself:

a gorgeously restored sideboard to complete my vintage kitchen

it even has most of the original manufacturer’s label from 1938 which thrills me to no end!

and just how much did all of these vintage treasures cost?

a mere €230! She shoots she scores!

An Asian Inspired Thrifty Thursday

I spent the better part of my 20’s living in Tokyo…

A delightful lunch at the onsen (hot spring day spa)

working at a pretty awesome job…

Akk! That date looks positively vintage today!

I have fond (& rather offbeat) memories of my time spent in Japan and thus a great affection for all things authentically Asian.

An actual vintage score from my time in Tokyo that managed to join me on my many international moves, unfortunately the matching trousers didn’t survive, fortunately it coordinates perfectly with my tattoos!

Vintage Top (had since the 90’s) €0 – Belt (thrifted) €1.50 – Jeans (had for years) €0 – Bracelets (handmade from scraps) €0 – Felt Clogs (thrifted) €3

Total cost: €4.50

This gorgeous silk dress was an amazing thrift find – it needed a wee bit of love & attention but for only €1.50 I was more than up for re-stitching the seams & adding a few snaps!

Chinese Dress (thrifted) €1.50 – Vintage Sandals (ebay) €6

Total cost: €7.50

I snagged a fantastic second hand bargain online with this vintage embroidered linen top for only €1.00!

Vintage Top (thrifted online) €1 – Trousers (thrifted) €2 – Bracelet & Rings (thrifted & inherited) €2 – Clogs (had since Tokyo) €0

Total cost: €5

Check out the intro/outro of my Kawaii Bento Picks video tutorial from last year to see me sporting my 1990’s yukata + as a bonus hear my oddball Japanese!

The Great Thrift Outfit Swap

Ariane (my fellow Canadian frugal fox & creator of the brilliant Thrift Outfit blog) and I challenged each other to create a funky look out of the thrifted bits of awesome we received in our international swap…

are you diggin’ that glittery poncho she sent as much as I am?

Crocheted Beanie (Gift from Belle Monde Handmade) €0 – Vintage Sunglasses (thrifted) €0.20 – Earrings (flea market) €0.50 – Poncho (from Ariane) €0 – Longsleeved Tee (had for years) €0 – T-skirt (refashioned) €0 – Leggings (thrifted) €1 – Knit socks (handmade gift) €0 – Chunky-heeled shoes (had for years) €0

Awesome Ariane also sent me the gorgeous embroidered tunic that I had coveted from her Inspire…expire post:

…but what looked fabulous on her appeared as if I’d been playing dress-up in an elementary school costume box on me.

a chop + a bit of elastic & a quick hem =

a delightful new skirt!

Earrings (handmade gift) €0 – Vintage blouse (thrifted) €1 – Skirt (refashioned) €0 – Knit socks (handmade gift) €0 – Geisswein galoshes (ebay) €14  & my solution for saving my bottom from being unintentionally flashed as I walk up the stairs in a skirt: a pair of boxer briefs

and a fantastic vest top!

A Wild West Thrifty Thursday

Having grown up in Alberta (a.k.a: the Texas of Canada) I know a wee bit about dressing the part of an urban cowboy…

little known fact: At the beginning of my long-ago starving artist days, in addition to waitressing, I taught fancy two-stepping classes to help make ends meet – & I can still polka, country foxtrot, spin, weave & turn like nobody’s business! Yeehaw!

Cowboy Hat (gift) €0 – Honest-to-goodness-cowboy-shirt (had since the 90’s) €0 – Undershirt (had for years) €0 – Belt (thrifted & refashioned) €0.10 – Jeans (had for years) €0 – Two-steppin’ cowboy boots (thrifted) €1.50

Total cost: €1.60

To tuck or not to tuck? Head on over to Conversations with a Cowboy and get the scoop on why some cowboys do and some don’t…

Can you believe I scored those gorgeous boots for a mere €1.50?

A Back To School Thrifty Thursday

Hands up if your school days were the best time of your life…

yeah…me neither!

Thinking back to those oh-so-long-ago days of taunts & torments makes me breathe a massive sigh of relief that September has not meant heading back to school for a very long time…and I can assure anyone who is going through a difficult school time that it does get indescribably better once you leave the petri dish of high school. …and to the bullies: Karma is patient and will always find you in the end.
